So what actually happens at a Prima Volta concert? Well, imagine you've gone to a fine restaurant, but instead of going to the dining room you go into the kitchen. Here you can watch the masterchefs mixing the ingredients to create a gourmet dish. Only we, Prima Volta, are the masterchefs, and you, the audience, decide which ingredients we will use. People often ask us how we all know what each other are about to play. The short answer is that we don't know! Therefore, keen listeners may spot wrong notes, or as Miguel likes to call them, unexpected notes, but it is from these unexpected notes that we think the most exciting moments happen. Every concert is unique, but here are some examples of some of our favourite games we like to play with the audience:
Ring Ring Fantasy
Get your phone out, share your ring tones with us and we'll create a fantasia from whatever you give us.
Baroque and Roll
Baroque style improvisation given the Prima Volta twist. Here we will ask you to give us some notes to build our first melody. We use this as a basis for a prelude and two part invention.
Yes, if you're lucky, we will actually improvise a full three movement sonata on the spot, our ultimate test of active listening and structure.
Tell us a story
We invite you to help us create a short story which we then create in music. The more far fetched the better!
Changing the Rules
Help us to create some avant garde music by giving us some fun rules to play with. We'll give you some examples to get started and you can then let your imaginations run wild!
Theme and Variations
We repeat a simple theme many times, varying it in some way each time, but need your help to choose a theme!
A Suite of Dances, Prima Volta style. From Bourrees to Bossa Novas, or anything else in between.
